Annaberg is part of the Dachstein West Ski region and consists of 140 kilometres of downhill ski piste and has 45 chair lifts. Ski runs range from very easy family runs to some more difficult black runs. However the beauty of this area are the great number of intermediate runs. In deep snow conditions the sides of the piste make for a powder heaven.
Thanks to a large investment in state of the art snow cannons, the Dachstein West region is able to offer a ski season from December until April.
The Mountains of the Dachstein West provide an abundance of cosy traditional Austrian huts (16) where the weary skier can take in the wonderful atmosphere that has made Austria so famous. Forget the over crowded slopes of France and Italy that exist on their names which were famous in the 70's and enjoy being able to ski the whole piste with some of the most wonderful views in Europe.
If skiing Isn't your thing then why not take the Gosaukamm cable car and go for a snow covered winters walk in the Alps. There are some well marked walking routes which also take you to a number of huts. The romantic walk from the Hornspitz to the Edtalm is especially nice. Along route there are numerous places to take in the splendour of your surroundings and soke up some Sun too. Or even go hot air ballooning, paragliding or even ice climbing.
Winter evenings always have a lovely warm cosy feeling went sat beside a Kacheloffen (stone fireplace) drinking a ghluewine or jaeger tea adn watching the snow fall outside. However if you're not quite ready to settle in for the evening then why not take a horse and trap up to an Alm (Austrian farming hut). It's the best way to soak up the atmosphere of the area and there's always the chance to have a warming drink and a snack at the Alm before returning. If you're lucky the horseman would have been supplying you with Scnapps along the way. If time is short, a walk in the moonlight is also very nice.
There are plenty of ski hire shops in the area and Annaberg is served by Russegger Sport in the village. Annaberg also has its own Ski School along with Russbach and Gosau. Just ask for a recommendation.
Another wonderful thingabout the area is that it is a very child friendly environment. In fact I have not seen a more child friendly environment in Europe! We can make recommendations regarding the excellent Day Nursery's just off the piste. They look after and keep the children entertained all day. They will even take the children out for lunch. In fact sometimes it was difficult to get out daughter out of the Nursery!
